The brewery was founded in 2003 by fourth generation farmer, Steven Urwin, on the 200 acre family farm in Grade II listed converted farm buildings.
After the foot and mouth episode in 2001, Steven decided to diversify into brewing, after he realised that the farm would not be able to sustain future generations of the family.
After the beers initial launch at the 2003 Tyneside Beer Festival, demand and praise for these traditional ales throughout the region has been very strong indeed – proof if ever it was needed, that the true beer enthusiast appreciates quality above all else.
The beers have won awards including CAMRA Regional Awards and SIBA Regional and National Awards. Nel’s Best, our best selling ale, has been one of 8 finalists in the Champion Beer of Britain Awards in 2003 and 2006. We are unique in this area by growing the barley for our beer. We now produce six real ales in casks and four in bottles.
Nel’s Best

ABV 4.2
Goldings Hops blended with the finest English malt produces this golden coloured premium ale, very pleasant to drink, not overly bitter and easy on the pallet.
Serious ale drinkers will enjoy all this full bodied ale has to offer and it is no surprise that word is spreading fast throughout the real ale fraternity.
Best Bitter in the North winner under the SIBA Awards 2008.

Nettle Beer

ABV 4.5%
This ale can only be produced in the Spring, when the nettles on the farm are at the perfect stage to be picked. Based on a 14th century recipe, this ale is supposed to help the common cold and gout!
Latest news from the brewery: For the first time in four years, we are bottling our 4.5% ABV Nettle Beer, and selling it by the pint and by the bottle at the brewery. Michael, the Head Brewer has picked all the nettles by hand (he's complaining about stung hands and a bad back) and the beautiful amber coloured ale will be ready very soon.. Come up to the brewery to buy your 2011 nettle beer or give us a ring to reserve on 01661 886 192.
